Hello, I'm Karlien

I am passionate about supporting individuals through life transitions, emotional challenges, and personal growth. My work is grounded in empathy, curiosity, authenticity, and the belief that feeling genuinely understood can create space for meaningful change.
Through my personal experiences and work in community and government-based roles, I have seen how people navigate stress, trauma, grief, uncertainty, and systems that may leave them feeling unseen or disconnected from themselves.
These experiences strengthened my belief that people need space to reflect on what they are carrying, rather than simply being expected to push through it. I am interested in how past relationships, emotional patterns, and life experiences influence the ways we cope, connect with others, and understand ourselves.
I primarily support adults navigating life transitions, while welcoming anyone who feels connected to my words or approach.

In our work together, clients experience me as

Authentic · Empathetic · Curious · Grounded · Reflective

My therapeutic approach

My approach draws from psychodynamic, emotion-focused, and relational perspectives. I believe that our experiences, relationships, and coping strategies developed for meaningful reasons within the context of our lives.

Together, we can explore these patterns with compassion and curiosity, creating space for deeper emotional understanding and new perspectives. I aim to offer an environment where you feel safe enough to be honest and fully yourself, while still leaving room for gentle challenge, growth, and discovery.

I also believe that authentic relational experiences, supported by psychoeducation, can help us reshape the stories we carry and develop new ways of responding emotionally and physically.

Working with me, you would learn to:

  • Understand the emotional patterns shaping your present life
  • Explore how past experiences influence relationships and coping
  • Approach yourself with curiosity rather than shame or criticism
  • Express emotions, needs, and boundaries more authentically
  • Develop new perspectives on difficult circumstances
  • Strengthen resilience and move toward meaningful change

Training & professional development

  • Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology, in progress
  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, University of British Columbia
  • Major in Sport, Health and Physical Education
  • Minor in Psychology
