My name is Kelly Kooner, and I am a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology student at Yorkville University. I’m drawn to counselling because I believe in creating spaces where people feel seen, heard, and understood, especially during moments of stress or transition. My approach centres on collaboration, cultural humility, and supporting clients in reconnecting with their strengths. In addition to my graduate studies, I bring over five years of student affairs experience in post-secondary settings, where I support young adults navigating complex emotional, academic, and interpersonal challenges. This work has deepened my commitment to fostering safety, empowerment, and compassion in the counselling room.
My journey into counselling has been shaped by a deep appreciation for the importance of supportive relationships and culturally responsive care. Personally, I know the impact that non-judgmental listening and genuine connection can have during difficult times. Professionally, supporting young adults in crisis through my professional experiences has shown me how profoundly people’s stories, identities, and lived experiences influence their well-being. These experiences have guided my desire to walk alongside others with empathy, curiosity, and respect.
I use an integrative, trauma-informed, client-centred approach grounded in Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Adlerian concepts, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). I work collaboratively, adapting the pace and structure to each client’s needs, and I strive to honour the cultural, relational, and contextual factors shaping their experiences.
My work is guided by empathy, curiosity, cultural humility, and respect for each client’s lived experience. I aim to create a warm, non-judgmental environment where clients feel safe to explore their thoughts, emotions, and identities without pressure or expectation. I hold space gently, prioritizing safety, autonomy, and empowerment in every session.
I welcome working with anyone who feels aligned with my services.
