Meet Megan Sutherland

Hello, my name is Megan, and I am currently completing my Master's of Arts in Counselling Psychology with Yorkville University. I believe in creating a safe and collaborative space where individuals feel safe and empowered to explore their feelings, experiences, and thoughts. My approach is rooted in providing a warm, attuned and compassionate environment and in meeting clients where they are at, providing client-centered care. Currently, I partake in continuous learning and professional development to deepen my knowledge and understanding of various counselling theories and practices in order to provide quality care to my clients. My work is often inspired by building a therapeutic rapport and witnessing client growth, from being heard, seen and valued.

My previous career, which involved working with youth in care, shaped my passion for wanting to go into the counselling field, as I felt that I wanted to help others on a deeper level. I wanted to provide a confidential space to allow clients to be their true self and be accepted as they are. I have extensive experience working with various exceptionalities and individuals who identify as neurodivergent and appreciate their unique challenges and gifts. After many years, I decided it was time to further my education and provide unwavering support and care to those who needed it.

My Therapeutic Approach

I use a strengths-based approach and use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as well as humanistic therapy. I believe in empowering clients to make changes in their lives, allowing them to reach the goals they set for themselves. I also believe that clients have the innate ability to feel better and that they are the experts of their own lives. In examining cognitive distortions and challenging negative core beliefs, a client can start to shift their thinking and work towards other belief systems that would serve them more positively. I provide unconditional support to my clients and genuinely believe people have the capacity to heal.

I'm committed to creating a safe, non-judgmental space grounded in empathy, authenticity, and empowerment, so every client feels truly seen, heard, and understood. By fostering an environment of trust and collaboration, I aim to help clients explore their challenges and strengths and develop the tools they need to thrive.

Population that I prefer working with

In my personal and professional life, I've had the privilege of working with a diverse range of individuals, from young children to adults, each with their own unique backgrounds and circumstances. I feel especially called to work with individuals with various exceptionalities or who may identify as neurodivergent. However, I welcome anyone who may feel they align with my services.
