Meet

Semhar (Mary) Dawit

Hello! My name is Mary Dawit, and I’m currently a Counselling Practicum Student in the Master of Psychotherapy and Spirituality program at St. Stephen’s College. I’m passionate about helping people navigate challenges such as anxiety, depression, or life transitions with compassion and practical strategies. I work from a person-centred perspective, where I see you as the expert of your own story, and I strive to walk alongside you as we work toward growth and resilience. Outside of my studies, I enjoy playing volleyball, dancing, and reading.

My journey into counselling has been shaped by both my professional and personal experiences. My earlier training in Medical Laboratory Science gave me a deep appreciation for physical health, while my work in Social Work emphasized the importance of social systems, relationships, and community well-being. Over time, I realized that true healing goes even deeper—it includes the emotional, psychological, and spiritual dimensions of life.

What has guided me most are my values of empathy, respect, and holistic care. I believe every person holds inherent strength and wisdom, and my role as a counsellor is to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where people feel supported to access those inner resources. My own life experiences, as well as journeying with diverse individuals through their challenges, have reinforced my conviction that healing is not one-dimensional—it happens when mind, body, and spirit are cared for together.

My Therapeutic Approach

My counselling approach is primarily person-centered, which means I place great importance on creating a respectful, empathetic, and collaborative space where clients feel truly heard and valued. Each individual is the expert in their own story, and I strive to walk alongside them as they navigate their healing journey.
I also draw on evidence-based strategies from Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients recognize unhelpful thought patterns and develop practical coping skills. When it feels meaningful for the client, I integrate spiritual and cultural perspectives, supporting healing in a way that honors the whole person—mind, body, and spirit.

The values that guide my work are empathy, respect, and collaboration. I believe that healing begins in the context of a safe and supportive relationship, so I am intentional about fostering a space where clients feel welcomed, heard, and free from judgment.

I hold space by listening deeply and honouring the uniqueness of each person’s story, trusting that clients are the experts in their own lives. For me, it’s important to create an environment where people feel empowered to explore their thoughts and emotions at their own pace, while also building resilience and hope.
At the heart of my work is a commitment to holistic care supporting the mind, body, and spirit o clients can move toward lasting wellness and personal growth

Population that I prefer working with

I welcome working with anyone who feels aligned with my services, creating a supportive and nonjudgmental space for all. I am especially passionate about supporting individuals facing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and challenges related to family or interpersonal relationships.
I have experience working with diverse populations, including children, adolescents, and adults, in both individual and group settings. My goal is to help clients build resilience, navigate life transitions, and strengthen their sense of self in ways that honour their unique journeys.
