Meet Shui Jiang

My name in Chinese means “river” (江) and “water” (水), which describes how I approach counselling, steady, gentle, and supportive as people find their own direction. I hold a PhD in medical genetics and completed postdoctoral research on how genetics and life experiences shape mental health. I’m now completing my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology and working toward becoming a Canadian Certified Counsellor. After many years in research, I realized that knowledge alone can’t fully speak to the depth of human experience. What draws me to this work is the chance to sit with people, to listen to their stories, their emotions, and the tender moments that make us human

I come from a family with a traumatic history, and those early experiences shaped how I understand both suffering and resilience. I have seen moments when medical expertise alone could not ease someone’s pain, and losses that had to be carried rather than resolved. Throughout my academic and professional journey, I have been warmly supported, and at times kindly challenged, by mentors who genuinely helped me grow. These experiences have rooted my belief in presence, attunement, compassionate accountability, and gentle challenge as core elements of therapeutic work, and they continue to guide my path into counselling.

My Therapeutic Approach

My approach is relational, flexible, and grounded in understanding each person’s unique story. I draw on somatic and attachment-based ideas, and I pay attention to how emotions show up in the body and in relationships. I work gently and collaboratively, focusing on safety, steadiness, and clear boundaries at a pace that feels right for the client. I also consider how biology (including genetics), stress, and life experiences shape people, and I tailor strategies to what feels most supportive for each person.

I’m guided by the belief that while many parts of our lives, our histories, families, and even some biological vulnerabilities, may not be changeable, we still have some choice in how we relate to them. My work is grounded in authenticity, agency, and self-understanding. I don’t aim to ‘fix’ people or create a perfect happy ending. Instead, I try to offer a safe, steady, and collaborative space where clients can explore their inner world with honesty and compassion. I hold space with attention to emotional regulation and with respect for each person’s pace, and I aim to support clients in making choices that feel aligned with who they want to become.

Population that I prefer working with

I feel especially called to work with people who are navigating identity changes, attachment or relationship issues, high sensitivity, perfectionism, career or school stress, and feelings of shame, and anxiety. I’m particularly drawn to clients who are reflective and curious about their inner world, but you don’t need to have it all figured out to work with me. I also welcome anyone who resonates with my approach and values, and I support clients ages 15 and up. In addition to individual therapy, I’m interested in working with couples as they build understanding, improve communication, and explore their patterns with more clarity and compassion.

Fun Facts

I was raised in China and moved to Canada in 2012. In 2022, I started CanSkate and later transitioned into adult figure skating. Skating has become a meaningful practice for me; it teaches balance, how to fall safely and get back up, and how to move through that small moment of fear before trying something new. For me, it’s both a physical skill and a reminder of resilience, courage, connection, and ongoing growth.
