What is Single Session Therapy?

Single Session Therapy is a specialized, one-time counselling service designed to target your immediate concerns, whether those relate to emotional stress, mental health struggles, or sudden life changes. During this intensive, client-focused session, our dedicated therapists will work closely with you to debrief, refocus, and recalibrate your emotional and mental state.

What Kind of Situations or Challenges Can Someone be Facing to Need SST?

SST is often helpful for individuals experiencing situations where they need support but may not require long-term therapy. Some examples include:

  • Short-term issues that are resolved by gaining clarity, perspective, or coping strategies
  • Decision-making difficulties (e.g., career change, relationship decisions)
  • Situational stress (e.g., work stress, family conflict)
  • Seeking advice or guidance on specific issues, like how to approach a difficult conversation or conflict resolution

How do I know if I need counselling or SST?

Choosing between SST and longer-term counseling often depends on the complexity and duration of the issue:

SST is typically best for:

  • Specific, time-sensitive issues.
  • Those who are looking for one-time advice or support.
  • People who are unsure if they want to commit to ongoing counselling.

Traditional Counseling is Usually Better for:

  • Deeper, more chronic concerns (e.g., long-term trauma, depression, or anxiety).
  • Those seeking ongoing emotional support.
  • Situations where patterns of behavior need to be explored and addressed over time.

You may be thinking...

If it usually takes counselling a few sessions to understand underlying issues, how is SST effective with so little time?

A graphic of a magnifying glass

That’s a completely valid concern. Traditional therapy often explores deeper patterns over time, while Single Session Therapy is designed for a different purpose. SST focuses on what’s most important to you right now. It offers a structured and collaborative space to gain clarity, identify immediate next steps, and leave with something helpful—even if it’s just one session. Many clients are surprised by how much they can discover in a single, focused conversation.

  • SST's focus is narrow and specific: Instead of exploring a wide range of issues, the session targets one specific challenge or question.
  • Goal-setting is clear and solution-oriented, helping you leave with actionable steps to move forward.
  • Strengths-based approach: SST often focuses on building resilience, exploring what works, and strengthening coping mechanisms in a short amount of time.
  • Direct feedback is given, allowing the person to gain insights and strategies quickly.

How Does SST Work to Resolve Urgent Issues?

Urgent issues can feel overwhelming, and it’s understandable to wonder if one session can really help. SST is solution-focused and centered around your strengths. Our therapists are trained to support you in finding calm, direction, or relief—even when time is short. Whether you're facing a tough decision, navigating conflict, or simply feeling stuck, SST helps bring a sense of stability and momentum.

SST works for urgent issues by:

  • Offering immediate, focused support for those facing time-sensitive decisions.
  • Creating a sense of relief in knowing that immediate steps are in place to deal with the situation.
  • Clarifying the issue at hand and providing actionable strategies or coping tools.
  • Helping individuals gain perspective or reframe your challenges, so you feel less overwhelmed.
  • Providing a clear path forward (e.g., handling a work-related issue or deciding on how to communicate with someone).
